Our trip to Olgivi Gorge and Tanzania was spectacular.Thirty miles from Olduvai, we visited Laetoli. About 3.5 million years ago, the volcano's, Sadiman bordering the Serengeti Plain, light ash eruptions during the dry season covered the area. Following a light rain, foot prints of animals remained as the ash turned to rock. Among these the Leakey team found human-like footprints. The exact site is now cover for protection from the elements, but we saw several other layers in this area covered with various footprints of animals, some now extinct. A Maasai warrior stands guard.

The Africa trip group picture. OLDUVAI GORGE did not exist two million years ago. A great alkaline lake covered the region. After millions of years, it drained following an earthquake, exposing in layers, its past accumulation of fossilized bones. Our group picture is at the site Mary Leakey found the skull of Australopitbecus boisei (Zing) in 1959. Analysis showed the skull to be 1.75 million years old.
