Words to ponder.-----For many as are the ills that are incident to the nature of man, we have ourselves invented more than those that nature lays upon us ---Will Durant The Life of Greece.......
MORE WORDS--Following my Quaker heritage since boyhood and the age of accountability, I have sought the "truth to be free". Much of my effort has been through the scientific approach, having chosen the field of medicine as my life's work... In many ways it has been gratifying. It offered me the opportunity to practice and explore the values I held most worth while, knowledge through the study of science and service to people. J. Bronowski, in The Ascent Of Man, reminds us that "SCIENCE is a very human form of knowledge. We are always at the brink of the known, we always feel forward for what is to be hoped. Every judgment in science stands on the edge of error, and is personal". Now at THREE score and TWELVE, I find that "the freedom" comes not with arrogant ignorance and dogma but through the pursuit of truth and understanding, humbly knowing that all information is imperfect. Respect for this human condition frees me to love others more fully. JBK2000
From "The Age Of Faith, The Story of Civilization" by Will Durant CIVILIZATION is a union of soil and soul--the resources of the earth transformed by desire and discipline. Behind the facade, and under the burden , of the courts and palaces, temples and schools, letters and luxuries and arts stands the basic man.
Mohammed, like Moses, used religion as a means to hygiene as well as to morality, on the general principle that the RATIONAL can secure popular acceptance only in the form of the MYSTICAL.
MY PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE seems to be guided by reason and science, shunning dead end dogmas, motivated by an appreciation of life and the lives of others, seeking to reach goals of human happiness, freedom and understanding on this earth, in this life. JBK 2001
