Ken graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1952, interned at Cincinnati General Hospital in1953 and reported immediately to the Grady Memorial Hospital as a first year medical resident. Medical doctors and other health professionals were subjected to the draft during the Korean conflict.

LTJG James Bunting Kenley M.D. was ordered to active duty August 1954 from Atlanta, Georgia upon the completion of a resident year in Medicine at Emory University. He reported to the Director of the Navel Research Laboratory. He served as the Laboratory Dispensary Medical Officer including the Chesapeake Annex in Maryland and periodic MOD for the Naval Gun Factory in Washington D.C. In connection with research matters he also served temporary duty at the Army Chemical Center in Maryland.

  “I had the privilege of working with and meeting the health needs of some very famous scientist. Much of our work had to do with detecting and preventing health hazards to military and civilian populations. We were years ahead of out time”, he added. Along with commendations from the Director, he received the National Defense Service Medal.

   Although he was soon promoted to the rank of lieutenant in the Medical Corps, he elected honorable discharge July 1956 to return to Virginia to fulfill state scholarship obligations with the Virginia Health Department during its polio eradication efforts.
